Transparent braces

Modern technologies have made it possible to create aesthetically appealing solutions for bite correction that significantly differ from traditional metal braces. These classic braces are often noticeable on the teeth and may not be suitable for all patients.

Clear braces are structurally similar to metal ones. Rings are placed on the molars, providing support for the entire system. The braces, made from square elements, are attached to the teeth and connected by an orthodontic archwire.

Although all clear braces use a metal archwire, it can be made less noticeable by coating it with a Teflon polymer. This enhances aesthetics, but the coating may wear off, so such a wire is recommended for short-term use.

Clear braces are typically larger than metal ones due to the nature of the materials used. However, their colorlessness makes them less noticeable, even up close.

Clear braces are among the most "invisible" bracket systems available. Blanco Clinic offers an excellent solution for patients who care about both effectiveness and aesthetics during treatment.

Types of Clear Braces

Clear bracket systems are divided into two types depending on the material used.

Plastic Braces
This is the most affordable option for invisible braces but also the most controversial. Plastic is a brittle and not very durable material. Since plastic is easy to produce, these braces are cheaper. However, polymer brackets wear out faster and require frequent repairs. Plastic is porous, which leads to the accumulation of food particles and the development of unpleasant odors. It can also stain from food, resulting in a loss of transparency.

Due to the brittleness and insufficient reliability of plastic, the orthodontists at Blanco Clinic do not install such braces. We prefer to use modern and aesthetic materials to ensure predictable results. You'll learn about the second type of clear braces below.

Sapphire Braces
Sapphire braces are made from artificial sapphire, synthesized in a laboratory using a complex process. Therefore, they are more expensive than plastic or metal braces. Sapphire is completely transparent, smooth, and shiny, as well as resistant to staining and quite durable, although it may not withstand direct impact.

When Are Clear Braces Used?

A misaligned bite is not only an aesthetic issue but also a health concern. Improper load distribution can lead to tooth wear, enamel chipping, cavities, and pain.

The installation of a bracket system is a popular method for treating bite abnormalities. Clear braces help address the following problems:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Large gaps between teeth
  • Abnormal positioning of individual teeth
  • Disproportionately developed jaws
  • Other bite anomalies

During your first consultation, the orthodontist will discuss all treatment options. Together with the doctor, you will choose the optimal solution—one that is aesthetic, reliable, and within your budget.

How Long to Wear Clear Braces

The duration of wearing clear braces depends on many factors, just like with other systems. Teeth alignment does not happen instantly, especially in adults. Treatment may take from 1 to 2 years, and the duration of wearing braces varies depending on the bite anomaly, age, and individual characteristics of the patient.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Clear Braces

Clear braces have distinct aesthetic advantages but also their own unique characteristics.

Advantages:

  • Complete transparency and pleasant shine
  • Discreet appearance on the teeth
  • Smooth surfaces, minimizing soft tissue injuries

Disadvantages:

  • Less durable compared to metal braces
  • Possibility of staining with plastic braces
  • High cost
  • Due to transparency, plaque can be visible with poor hygiene

Clear braces can reveal plaque buildup with inadequate hygiene, which may motivate patients to take better care of their teeth. Greater transparency also requires caution in food selection and protection of braces during sports activities. Active athletes should consider protective mouthguards or more durable metal braces.

You can combine clear and metal braces by placing aesthetic braces in the smile zone and metal braces on the molars. This design provides greater strength, as metal, resistant to chipping, is placed in the area of primary load.
