Teeth whitening stages

Before the procedure, the doctor will examine the oral cavity to make sure that the whitening is safe for the patient. If necessary, professional dental hygiene cleaning is performed to remove plaque and tartar, as they can interfere with uniform whitening.

The doctor can also remove minor defects, such as caries or enamel damage, to avoid irritation of the teeth during the procedure.

To avoid irritation and damage to the gums, the dentist isolates them with a special protective gel or cofferdam (rubber barrier). This is important so that the whitening gel affects only the teeth and does not touch the soft tissues.

After isolation, the doctor applies the whitening composition to the surface of the teeth. In professional whitening rooms, hydrogen peroxide or carbamide are most often used, which penetrate the enamel structure and eliminate pigmentation.

The whitening gel is activated either simply through chemical interaction or with a special lamp (laser or LED lamp). This stage lasts from 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the method and the degree of lightening that needs to be achieved.

Light activation speeds up the whitening process and allows for a more intense effect in a short time. During the procedure, the doctor can renew the gel on the teeth several times to enhance the effect.

After the bleaching is complete, the dentist removes the bleaching compound and thoroughly rinses the oral cavity. The doctor evaluates the achieved result and, if necessary, can offer an additional bleaching session if more intensive whitening is required.

The patient is also given recommendations on dental care after the procedure to maintain the result for a long time, including advice on nutrition and the choice of hygiene products.

What Happens If You Don't Whiten Your Teeth Regularly
The appearance of persistent pigmentation

Over time, dark spots and plaque can form on teeth due to the consumption of staining products such as coffee, tea, wine, and smoking. If regular whitening is not performed, the pigmentation becomes more pronounced and is more difficult to remove with regular dental cleaning.

Even professional hygienic cleaning is not always able to remove deep stains, and eventually the teeth lose their natural white color, becoming dull and yellowish.

Aesthetic discomfort and uncertainty

Plaque and tooth stains can cause self-doubt and aesthetic discomfort. Many people try to hide their smile or avoid socializing because of the dark shade of their teeth. This can affect personal and professional relationships, as well as a person’s self-esteem. Regular whitening helps keep teeth clean and white, creating a more attractive and confident smile.

Age-related discoloration of teeth

As we age, tooth enamel wears thinner, and the inner layer of the tooth, called dentin, becomes more visible. Dentin has a yellowish tint, which is why teeth may appear darker with age.

This process is natural, but if you do not perform regular whitening procedures, age-related changes in tooth color become even more pronounced. Regular whitening helps slow down this process and keep your teeth whiter for many years.

Question and Answer
How long does the effect of teeth whitening last?
Is teeth whitening safe?
Is teeth whitening suitable for everyone?
Are there any home methods for teeth whitening and how effective are they?

The duration of the whitening effect depends on the patient's lifestyle and the whitening method. On average, the result lasts from 6 months to 2 years. Factors such as smoking, frequent consumption of coffee, tea, wine or brightly colored foods can shorten the period of maintaining whiteness.

To prolong the effect, it is recommended to use special pastes and rinses that maintain the whiteness of teeth, as well as regularly undergo professional hygiene cleanings.

Modern teeth whitening methods are considered safe, provided that the procedure is performed under the supervision of a dentist and using quality materials. However, some patients may experience side effects such as increased tooth sensitivity or gum irritation.

These symptoms are usually temporary and disappear within a few days after the procedure. It is important to follow your doctor's recommendations and avoid excessive use of whitening products at home.

Teeth whitening is not always suitable for all patients. People with severely damaged enamel, cavities, inflamed gums, or a large number of fillings may not be suitable for the procedure. In addition, whitening does not affect restorations such as fillings, crowns, and veneers, so the result may be uneven.

Before the whitening procedure, it is necessary to consult with a doctor to assess the condition of the oral cavity and determine whether whitening is suitable for a particular patient.

There are many home whitening products on the market, such as strips, gels, and trays. These methods can give results, but their effectiveness is lower than that of professional procedures. Home remedies whiten teeth by 1-2 shades, while professional whitening can lighten by 3-8 shades.

In addition, when using home remedies, there is a risk of gum irritation and increased tooth sensitivity. Therefore, home whitening is best done under the supervision of a dentist.
